  49. 2.) INTRODUCTION
  50. ----------------
  51.  
  52.     "CD Sheet Music" is a collection of sheet music by 
  53. various composers.  The music comes with a Table of Contents 
  54. so you can quickly find the piece of music you are looking 
  55. for by title and/or opus number; you may view the music on 
  56. screen or print it out. For more information about printing 
  57. see the HINTS section.
  58.  
  59.     Every effort has been made to make the contents of each CD 
  60. as complete as possible. CD Sheet Music consists mainly of 
  61. reproductions of public domain editions published before 1923. 
  62. Newly-discovered works, juvenilia, fragments, sketches, modern 
  63. arrangements, etc. are not always available because of copyright 
  64. or other restrictions and are therefore not included. 
  65.  
  66.     For CDs having the word "complete" in the title, we have 
  67. used the list of works from The New Grove Dictionary of Music 
  68. and Musicians as the source for the Table of Contents. Other CDs 
  69. with the word "ultimate" in the title are compilations that 
  70. contain a comprehensive survey of the repertoire. The editors

  73.     All of the disks share a similar format and it is only 
  74. necessary to install the program one time.  Once it is 
  75. installed, putting any CD Sheet Music CD in the CD player 
  76. will start CD Sheet Music.
  77.  
  78.     An Acrobat Reader(TM), version 3.0 or greater, must be 
  79. installed on your machine for CD Sheet Music to work.  We 
  80. recommend that Acrobat Reader(TM) 4.0 be installed, and 
  81. provide this software for Windows 95/98(TM) and Macintosh on 
  82. the CD.  See the HINTS section and MAC Information section 
  83. for more information regarding CD Sheet Music and 
  84. Acrobat(TM).
  85.  
  86.     Although the musical works in CD Sheet Music are in the 
  87. public domain, the files contained on the CD are copyrighted 
  88. material. When CD Sheet Music is first installed, a license 
  89. agreement is shown on-screen. In order for the program to 
  90. install, the license must be accepted. Please read the 
  91. license carefully. The CD Sheet Music files may not be 
  92. altered in any way, including removal or defeating the CD 
  93. Sheet Music logo, document information, or encryption. The 
  94. license is a single-user license, and the files may not be 
  95. copied to another CD or other storage device or sold to 
  96. anyone. 
  97.  
  98.     You may print as many copies of the files for your own 
  99. use as you wish. However, you may not sell copies of CD Sheet 
  100. Music files to your students or to other teachers. In fact, 
  101. many teachers will find it easier to encourage their students 
  102. to buy the CD and print their own copies of assignments.
  103.  
  104.     A printable PDF file (festival.pdf) is included on each 
  105. disk for use by teachers and students who need to certify 
  106. that the copies of CD Sheet Music that they are using are 
  107. legitimate copies.

  111. 3.) USAGE
  112. ---------
  113.  
  114.  
  115.   Searching for Music
  116.   -------------------
  117.  
  118.     After the initial installation, inserting any of the 
  119. titles in the CD Sheet Music series will open the Table of 
  120. Contents for that title. On the left side of the screen will 
  121. be "bookmarks" for the various titles (files) on the CD. On 
  122. the right side of the screen will be the full Table of 
  123. Contents, along with Opus or other catalog number (where 
  124. applicable) and the page count. The Table of Contents may be 
  125. printed for future reference.
  126.  
  127.     CD Sheet Music uses the "list of works" from the New 
  128. Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as the basis for its 
  129. Table of Contents.  Every attempt has been made to include 
  130. all significant, complete works in the category that have 
  131. appeared in standard editions.
  132.  
  133.     CD Sheet Music will be easier to use for searching music 
  134. if the check box for "Open Cross-Doc Links in Same Window" 
  135. box under "Files/Preferences/General" is NOT 
  136. checked/selected.  Doing so will cause each piece of music to 
  137. open in a NEW window and will keep your current position in 
  138. the table of contents.
  139.  
  140.     If you do not need to search for music, leave the "Open 
  141. Cross-Doc Links in Same Window" box checked in 
  142. "Files/Preferences/General."  You can check and uncheck this 
  143. box as needed.
  144.  
  145.     Acrobat Reader(TM) allows a maximum of twenty files to be 
  146. open at the same time.  If your machine slows down after a 
  147. while because of the open files, either close all the windows 
  148. open currently with (Ctrl-Alt-W) or "Window/Close All" from 
  149. the Menu Bar and then reopen the table of contents. You may 
  150. also close windows other than the table of contents by 
  151. selecting and closing them individually.
  152.  
  153.     If you are unsure of the piece of music you are looking 
  154. for, here is the preferred way to search:   1. In the 
  155. bookmark section (on the left of your screen), click on the 
  156. "+" sign to see all of the titles in that category.     2. 
  157. Click on the first title to see that piece. If it is the one 
  158. you are looking for, see "Navigation" for tips on how to use 
  159. the file. If it is not the one you are looking for, close the 
  160. file by typing <Ctrl-W> or clicking the "x" in the upper 
  161. right corner of your screen.
  162.  
  163.     Note: click the top "x" if you want to exit CD Sheet 
  164. Music entirely; click the "x" under the top one to close the 
  165. current file. If you are not sure if it is the right piece, 
  166. or if you would like to compare two pieces, you can leave the 
  167. current file open and click the Table of Contents file in the 
  168. Bookmark section on the left of your screen to go back to the 
  169. Table of Contents.     3. By clicking on titles and closing 
  170. them as described above, you may quickly access and search 
  171. for a particular piece of music.

  174. Index file
  175. -----------
  176.     Many of the CDs have an "Index" file below the Table of 
  177. Contents file. This file organizes the information in the 
  178. Table of Contents in a different way. For example, it may be 
  179. an alphabetical listing of all the titles, subtitles, or 
  180. first lines of pieces on a CD, with a reference to the main 
  181. title where the piece may be found.
  182.

  184.   Navigating though CD Sheet Music
  185.   ----------------------------------
  186.     Select music by clicking on an entry in the bookmarks 
  187. section on the left side of the table of contents.  The music 
  188. is categorized in sections that can be opened and closed with 
  189. the small boxes containing plus "+" and minus "-" signs next 
  190. to each section.
  191.  
  192.     Clicking on an entry brings up that piece of music.  
  193. Click the "Table of Contents" bookmark on the left hand side 
  194. to return to the table of contents.  The "Previous Doc" 
  195. button on the Command Bar can also be used to return to the 
  196. table of contents.
  197.  
  198.     Once the correct piece of music is displayed, you may 
  199. enlarge the viewing area by pressing F5to hide the bookmarks. 
  200. Pressing F5 again will re-open the bookmarks.
  201.  
  202.     You may set the default page view in your Acrobat Reader 
  203. Preferences (Ctrl+K). For large screens, "fit in window" may 
  204. work best. For others, "fit width" may be more suitable. 
  205. There are three buttons at the top of the work area that may 
  206. be accessed to change the page view. There is also a 
  207. percentage in the lower left of the work area that changes 
  208. the magnification of the screen.
  209.  
  210.     To the right of the percentage magnification is another 
  211. box that shows the current page number and the number of 
  212. pages in the file. Clicking on the left or right arrows will 
  213. advance or go back either a page at a time or to the 
  214. beginning or end of a piece. You may also use the "Page Up, 
  215. ""Page Down, ""Home," and "End" keys to quickly advance or go 
  216. back. The up and down cursor keys also work.
  217.  
  218.     The other buttons along the top of the work area can be 
  219. very useful. The "binoculars" can be used to search for words 
  220. in the Table of Contents (it does not operate for words 
  221. within the music).

  224.   Printing
  225.   --------
  226.     Each piece of music is a separate file to simplify 
  227. printing.  To print a piece of music select it (See 
  228. Navigating though "CD Sheet Music") and click the print 
  229. button on the command bar or go to "File/Print" on the menu 
  230. bar.  If the Tool Bar is not visible press <F8> or go to 
  231. "Window/Show Tool Bar".
  232.  
  233.     Only the currently selected piece of music will be 
  234. printed.  To print another piece of music you must select it 
  235. and then print it.  The Table of Contents can also be 
  236. selected and printed just like the other pieces of music.
  237.  
  238.    Setting your printer to print at 300dpi will result in the 
  239. fastest, highest quality printing.  Depending on your 
  240. printer, if it is set to print at a higher dpi, may make 
  241. printing slower without increasing the quality.  Setting your 
  242. printer to print at a lower dpi will speed up printing but 
  243. the quality will be much lower.

  245. CDSM is set to fit comfortably on either US letter size paper 
  246. (8.5x11 inches) or A4 (210x297mm).

  249.   Tool Bar
  250.   -----------
  251.     If the Tool Bar is not visible press <F8> or use the 
  252. "Window/Show Tool Bar" from the menu bar.

  255.   Missing Table of Contents/Bookmarks
  256.   -----------------------------------
  257.     If the bookmarks section on the left hand side of the 
  258. screen is not visible, press <F5> or use the "Windows/Show 
  259. Bookmarks" command from the menu bar.

  264.     If the Menu Bar is not visible, press <F7>.

  268. 4.) HINTS
  269. -----
  270.  
  271.   Autorun
  272.   -------
  273.  
  274.     The CD Sheet Music desktop shortcut/icon is used to start 
  275. CD Sheet Music automatically after installation.  If this 
  276. shortcut/icon is deleted or renamed the autorun feature will 
  277. not be able to automatically start CD Sheet Music.  Don't 
  278. delete or rename this shortcut/icon if you want the autorun 
  279. feature to work.  To re-enable this feature choose the 
  280. reinstall program choice from the popup window with the "Can 
  281. not find the shortcut/icon" message. 
  282.

  284.   Adobe Acrobat Reader
  285.   -------
  286.  
  287.     The files in "CD Sheet Music" are in Adobe Acrobat(TM) 
  288. PDF format.  This means that you can view and print the music 
  289. on every type of computer that Acrobat(TM) supports.  The CD-
  290. Rom includes Windows 95/98(TM) and Macintosh(TM) Adobe 
  291. Acrobat Reader 4.0 Installation Software. Other versions of 
  292. Acrobat Reader (Sun, Unix, etc.) are available as a free 
  293. download from Adobe (www.adobe.com).
  294.  
  295.     CD Sheet Music will work with Acrobat Reader(TM) 3.0 but 
  296. the screen displays and printouts may have a lower quality.  
  297. We recommend that Acrobat Reader(TM) 4.0 be used for CD Sheet 
  298. Music
  299.  
  300.     The Windows(TM) Acrobat Reader(TM) installation software 
  301. is in the WINACRO\INSTALL directory on the CD-Rom as well as 
  302. part of the CD Sheet Music installation program.
  303.  
  304.     The Macintosh(TM) Acrobat Reader(TM) install software is 
  305. in the MACACRO directory on the CD-Rom.
  306.  
  307.     Machines using software other than MAC(TM) or Windows(TM) 
  308. will need to install Acrobat reader(TM) for their machine.  
  309. After installing Acrobat Reader(TM), run Acrobat Reader(TM) 
  310. and use it to open the file "\MUSIC\TOC.PDF" on the CD-Rom.
  311.  
  312.  
  313.   Screen Resolution
  314.   -----------------
  315.  
  316.     "CD Sheet Music" will work best with screen resolutions 
  317. of 1024x768 and higher.  Lower screen resolutions will work 
  318. but it may be harder to view the music. If you have selected 
  319. a piece of music you can enlarge the display by pressing <F5> 
  320. to close the bookmarks on the left hand side of the screen.
  321.  
  322.     Press <F5> again to display the bookmarks on the left 
  323. hand side of the screen.
  324.  
  325.     Printing is not affected by the screen resolution.  For 
  326. more information on printing see HINTS - Printing.
  327.  
  328.  
  329.   Forcing Reinstall
  330.   -----------------
  331.  
  332.     If CD Sheet Music needs to be reinstalled, first try 
  333. using the Uninstall shortcut/icon.  Click on the "OK" button 
  334. if any errors happen during the uninstall.  After doing the 
  335. uninstall re-insert the CD Sheet Music CD-Rom.  The Install 
  336. program should start.
  337.  
  338.     If the uninstall shortcut/icon is not available, delete 
  339. the "CD Sheet Music" shortcut/icon from the Desktop - Note: 
  340. Deleting the program group shortcut/icon will NOT work (If 
  341. you are not sure which is which, delete all the "CD Sheet 
  342. Music" shortcuts/icons.)  After deleting the shortcut/icon 
  343. re-insert the "CD Sheet Music" CD-Rom.  The Install program 
  344. should start.
  345.  
  346.  
  347.   Aborted/Errors in Install
  348.   -------------------------
  349.  
  350.     If the Install is aborted, or an error message occurs 
  351. that is not fixed, the install program will uninstall all 
  352. installation done up to that point.  This means that aborting 
  353. the install after a previously successful install will erase 
  354. part or all of the previous installation.  If this happens, 
  355. run the install program again without aborting or not running 
  356. the portion of the install that caused the error.

  368. 6.) AOL / AcroBat Setup Instructions
  369. --------------------------

  371. NOTE:  To use "CD Sheet Music" set up AOL to use Acrobat as a Helper Application.

  374. Configuring AOL for Mac OS to Display PDF Files
  375.  
  376. You can display PDF files within America Online (AOL) 3.0 and later using 
  377. the PDFViewer plug-in, or using an Adobe Acrobat 3.0 or later viewer as a 
  378. helper application. When you use the PDFViewer plug-in, AOL displays PDF 
  379. files within its browser window. When AOL uses an Acrobat viewer as a 
  380. helper application, PDF files are displayed within your Acrobat viewer 
  381. window. 
  382.

  389. Configuring AOL to Use Acrobat as a Helper Application 
  390.  
  391. When you configure AOL to use your Acrobat viewer as a helper 
  392. application, AOL will start the Acrobat viewer, then display PDF files 
  393. within the Acrobat viewer window.
  394.  
  395. To configure AOL to use your Acrobat viewer as a helper application:
  396. 1. If the PDFViewer plug-in is installed, quit AOL and then remove the 
  397. PDFViewer plug-in from the AOL:Plug-ins folder.
  398. 2. Start AOL.
  399. 3. Choose Members > Preferences, then select Helpers.
  400. 4. Click Create.
  401. 5. Type "PDF Files" in the Description text box.
  402. 6. Type "application/pdf" in the MIME Type text box.
  403. 7. Type "pdf" in the Suffixes text box.
  404. 8. Do either of the following:
  405. - If you're using AOL 4.0, click Select, browse to the Acrobat viewer 
  406. application on your hard disk.
  407. - If you're using AOL 3.x, choose PDF from the Also Open Macintosh Files 
  408. With This Type pop-up menu, then type "PDF " in the File Type text box. 
  409. Make sure to include a space after the "F."
  410. 9. If you're using AOL 4.0, select the option labeled, "Open those files 
  411. with this helper application program even if AO can open them."
  412. 10. Click OK.
  413. 11. Restart AOL.

  416. Using the PDFViewer Plug-in 
  417.  
  418. PDFViewer is included with Acrobat 4.0, Acrobat Exchange 3.0x, and 
  419. Acrobat Reader 3.0 and later. If you select a PDF file while the 
  420. PDFViewer plug-in is installed, the file will download to AOL's Temp 
  421. folder, and then AOL will use your Acrobat viewer to display the file 
  422. within the browser window.
  423.  
  424. To use the PDFViewer plug-in, move it from the Acrobat:Web Browser Plug-
  425. in folder to the AOL:Plug-ins folder, then make sure Acrobat is 
  426. deselected as a helper application in AOL. In AOL, choose Member > 
  427. Preferences, then select Helpers. In the Helpers scroll box, select PDF 
  428. Files or Portable Document Format, then click Delete.
  429.  
  430.  
  431. Downloading a PDF File to Your Hard Drive 
  432.  
  433. You can download a PDF file from its link on a Web page. After you 
  434. download a PDF file, you can copy text from it, distribute it, or save it 
  435. to disk.
  436.  
  437. To download a PDF file from a link:
  438. 1. Position the cursor on the link to a PDF file click, hold the mouse 
  439. button down, and then choose Download Link To Disk from the pop-up menu.
  440. 2. In the Save As dialog box, select a location on your hard disk, then 
  441. click Save.
  442.  
  443. To download an open PDF file, click Back in the browser window and then 
  444. repeat [repeat? Yes.] steps 1-2 above.
